Scientists have discovered a new enzyme that helps break down terephthalate (TPA) very efficiently, which is a big step forward for recycling and sustainability, according to Good News Network. Since TPA is commonly found in single-use water bottles, carpets, and clothing, the discovery brings hope for reducing and reusing plastic waste associated with these products.

Professor Jen DuBois of Montana State University and Professor John McGeehan from the University of Portsmouth in England led this research. They hope that in time this new enzyme will be a crucial component of a circular economy and reduce the amount of resources extracted from and polluting our planet.
