About This Changes Everything

This Changes Everything is a book by Naomi Klein that describes how the climate crisis cannot be solved with our current capitalist economic system and offers new economic models for a more livable planet and just society.

This Changes Everything is a book, written by Naomi Klein and published in 2014, that argues that climate change is a civilizational wake-up call that we must change before our planet becomes unlivable. Specifically, Klein supposes that our economic model is the issue and that it is waging a war on earth.

Klein contends that the addiction to profit and growth is digging us in deeper every day and that the true path to moving away from fossil fuels is reigning in corporate power, rebuilding local economies, and reclaiming our democracies. But, Klein believes that this existential crisis of climate change can actually serve as an opportunity for people to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.

This Changes Everything exposes the myths that are clouding the climate debate. Klein points out that we have been told the market will save us, when in fact the addiction to profit and growth is digging us in deeper every day. We have been told it’s impossible to get off fossil fuels, when in fact we know exactly how to do it—it just requires breaking every rule in the “free-market” playbook.

The book also explores the idea that many of us have been told that humanity is too greedy and selfish to rise to this challenge. But according to Klein, all around the world, the fight for the next economy and against reckless extraction is already succeeding in ways both surprising and inspiring.

This Changes Everything was also adapted into a 2015 documentary, directed by Avi Lewis and produced by Alfonso Cuaron.
